  • Timecode
  • Bit depth
  • Encoding - the process of converting something into coded form. For example, the English language used to write this paper is a form of encoding.
  • DV - Digital Video. DV is often meant as a certain format of digital video, but this paper uses it to describe any type of digitally encoded video material.
  • NTSC (National Television Systems Committee): The television and video standard used

in most of the Americas, Taiwan, Japan, and Korea.

  • PAL (Phase Alternating Line): The television and video standard used in most of

Europe, Brazil, Algeria, and China.

  • SECAM: A video standard that is based on PAL and used in countries such as France,

Poland, Haiti, and Vietnam.

  • DRM -
  • FairPlay - a proprietary DRM system developed by Apple Computer that’s used in the iTunes Music Store to protect both audio and video content.
